ugichem
GmbH is a biotech company, located in Innsbruck, Austria. The company
has designed and developed novel cell membrane crossing and
physiologically active antisense compounds ("Cell Membrane Crossing
Oligomers, CMCOs"), which overcome the shortcomings of natural and
other synthetic nucleic acid oligomers.
The
company emerged from Professor Ugi´s group at the Technical
University Munich´s Institute for Organic Chemistry. The first
developments were supported from the business angels Elmar and Eva
Zeising. In 2003, ugichem closed a Series A round of financing
accompanied by a relocation of the company to Innsbruck, Austria. The
Munich based venture capital firm, The BioScience Ventures Group AG, a
specialist for providing risk management capital for early-stage
biotechnology companies, was leading the financing round in
partnersphip with The Austria Wirtschaftsservice GmbH (Vienna) through
its Life Science Austria program and the Hypo Tirol Bank. Since 2007,
the Swiss Business Angel Dr. Jürg Geigy is a further shareholder
of ugichem.
